The current SUNY Learning Commons platform has approximately 3,000 registered users, working in nearly 74 groups. We have heard from many who have utilized the Commons that they believe in the concept but the current platform is difficult to navigate and additional functionality is required. Additionally, development of the current Open Source, Commons in a Box platform has slowed significantly over the last two years.
Over the last several months, staff from the Center for Professional Development, Open SUNY, and SUNYConnect have been investigating the replacement of the SUNY Learning Commons with a more engaging, commercial, Software as a Service (SaaS) product.
With input from various stakeholder groups, the team developed specifications and released a Request for Information (RFI) for a SaaS based social collaboration platform, to support the needs of the faculty and staff of the SUNY System.
As we enter the Request for Proposal (RFP) Phase, the Project Core Team will continue to engage with Provost Office Staff, the wider-CCIO community, FACT2, and Commons Users and campus constituents to identify and evaluate products.
